Channing Yu to retire after next Mercury concert (file photo) Approbation lasting some four minutes flooded Mercury Orchestra and Chorale for its performance of Prokofiev’s Cantata from Alexander Nevsky. Nearly the same befell the orchestra alone and its conductor Channing Yu following their rendering of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony. All this deservedly so, but a noticeable shortage of voices often missed recreating those huge warring and celebrating Nevsky throngs. Mercury’s soloists in the concerto flavored Tenth Symphony surprised over and again with some of the most ravishing resonance heard in Sanders Theater. At Saturday evening’s all-Russian concert, it appeared that conductor Channing Yu yielded to his orchestra as much as he directed it. With a minimum of gestures, Yu might have been seen as another player in a team endeavor. His poise on the podium, especially before beginning a movement, also readied his audience, often guiding it into a meditative state. The big ensemble burst with polished musicians who played with a spirit all their own, radiating a collective personality never shy of infusing life-like colors, moves. During the times the Mercury Orchestra Chorale balanced, the outcome somewhat approximated the grand folkish feel of Nevsky. But there could be no power grabs by this chorale, part of the reason being the under-harnessed orchestral force in forte and louder passages. The Mercury’s conclusion to “Song About Alexander Nevsky” embraced the nationalistic convincingly. “The Crusaders at Pskov” evolved into fully developed captivating planes of devastation from the brass. The deeply lamenting strings took to that melody that would flower in the sixth movement. The upbeat marching of Mercury carried out the brief optimism of “Arise, People of Russia.” The biggest of the seven movements “The Battle on the Ice” needed to grow or build more, rather than attempting to promote action via sheer volume. Russian-born mezzo-soprano Natasha Novitskaia, attired in an improbable green sequined low-cut gown, was the soloist in the heart wrenching “The Field of the Dead.” While her oboe-like voice reached out, more raw emotion would have given the song what it really needed. With some orchestral fun, swirling winds and all in the Cantata’s final number, again the chorus was still trying, with limited success, to make an impact on “Alexander’s Entry into Pskov.” From the Eisesnstein movie In Dmitri Shostakovich’s near hour long Symphony No. 10 in E Minor, Op. 93, unusually long stretches of time are scored for solo instruments. Clarinetist Sylvain Bouix’s clear-throated perfectly arched theme, the warmly, deliciously outspoken bassoon of Daniel Beilman, and Brian van Sickle’s opulent flute were a few of many standouts. Of the four movements, it was the second, the Allegro, that was a truly terrifying joy ride that wholly thrilled. Once the third movement was underway, the ubiquitous theme took on more personality somewhere in the frame of mischievous, sneaky, coaxing, the march assuming a sardonic mood. Two laughing bassoons commented on the remarks of the English horn and oboe. A most welcome orchestral transparency continued throughout the final movement, which, by the way, did not blast away as did the two climatic passages in the opening Moderato. A few unattended nuances and moments of stalled momentum hardly mattered in the end. Together, Mercury and the Tenth made for a fine fit, the give and take of the conductor and orchestra a revitalizing adventure. Mercury’s next summer concert, and Yu’s final one with the orchestra, includes works of Rimsky-Korsakov, Grieg and Sibelius to be given August 12th at 8 pm, Sanders Theater. Absolutely no complaints about the performances of the Shanghai Quartet at Maverick Concerts in Woodstock on Sunday will come from this writer. Everything was played splendidly. I do have some reservations about one of the pieces, though. Frank Bridge’s claim to fame seems to be having taught Benjamin Britten. But Bridge’s music definitely deserves our attention without that connection. His relatively early Three (1904, when the composer was 25) finds the composer still completely settled in the romantic idiom from which he later escaped. And it’s not a masterpiece. But although clearly late-romantic music, it doesn’t sound exactly like anyone else and it certainly holds the attention, especially in a lush, passionate performance like the one the Shanghai Quartet gave us. Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6, in F Minor, Op. 80, is not only the last of his string quartets, it’s also the last music he wrote. If I’m correct, it’s the only piece he composed between the sudden death of his sister Fanny, which affected him profoundly, and his own death six months later. We don’t usually think of Mendelssohn as a tragic composer, but there’s no other way to describe this heartfelt and affecting expression of the composer’s grief. If I weren’t inclined to avoid superlatives I’d be tempted to say that it’s Mendelssohn’s greatest work. It’s certainly up there in his stratosphere. I’ve heard other performances of this music that tried to make it sound more “Mendelssohnian” and less heavy, but not this one. The Shanghai Quartet really dug in, even momentarily sacrificing some precision for passion in the coda of the first movement. The ensemble expressed an almost orchestral sound across a huge dynamic range with strong contrasts emphasized throughout. Recognizing how special this performance was, the audience gave it a standing O at intermission. Shanghai String Quartet I don’t dislike Edvard Grieg, not at all. But I do consider this fine and original composer as essentially a miniaturist. Even his popular piano concerto shows some signs of effort in holding together a longish span. (One pianist I know told me he’d never play it again; “I can’t stand that endless progression of eight-bar phrases,” he said.) Grieg’s String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 27, seems to me a deeply flawed work even while it displays the folk-influenced style of the composer at his best. The opening theme of the first movement is, frankly, dumb, and shows the excessive repetition which obtains throughout. If you’ve never heard this quartet before you’d likely still recognize its composer from the numerous familiar phrases scattered throughout. The themes seem to me poured into pre-existing forms into which they don’t fit comfortably; the Intermezzo is particularly padded with repetitions and the Finale seems cobbled together from diverse elements. Don’t tell any of this to the Shanghai Quartet, though. They advocated fervently and “sold” it to the audience, which responded with great enthusiasm. Forgive me if I have to stand aside but I admired the performance much more than the music. ALERT: The Ear reminds you that TODAY is the monthly “Sunday Live From the Chazen” chamber music concert. The program today features UW-Madison soprano Mimmi Fulmer, violinist Tyrone Greive (retired concertmaster of the Madison Symphony Orchestra) and pianist Michael Keller in music by Edvard Grieg and other Norwegian composers, including songs and sonatas. The live concert starts at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery 3. Admission is FREE. You can also stream it live by using this link: http://www.chazen.wisc.edu/about/news/in-the-news/sunday-afternoon-live-july-3-with-mimmi-fulmer-michael-keller-and-tyrone-gr By Jacob Stockinger Probably the premiere musical event of 2015 was the summer debut of the new group the Willy Street Chamber Players (below). The critics and audiences agreed: The programs and performances were simply outstanding. Many of the players perform with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, there Middleton Community Orchestra, the Madison Bach Musicians and other acclaimed local groups. Now the second season of five concerts – including one noontime lunch concert — will begin on this coming Friday night, July 8, at 6 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1021 Spaight Street, on Madison’s near east side. The first program features regular members and guest violinist Suzanne Beia (below). Beia plays second violin in the Pro Arte Quartet at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music , and also serves at concertmaster of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and assistant concertmaster of the Madison Symphony Orchestra . In addition, she performs in the Rhapsodie Quartet of the Madison Symphony Orchestra. The program includes the lovely “Souvenir of Florence” (1892) by Peter Tchaikovsky and the haunting Entr’acte for String Quartet (2011) by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw (below, in a photo by Dashon Burton). You can hear the Entr’acte in the YouTube video at the bottom. (The Ear hopes one day the group will do Shaw’s “By and By” with strings and a vocalist.) It’s too bad that the fourth annual Handel Aria Competition is on the same night. You would hope that such conflicts could be avoided in the summer. Theoretically you can make it to both concerts since the aria competition starts at 7:30 p.m. in Mills Hall. But it will probably be a hectic scurry from one to the other. Here is a link to more information about the Handel Aria Competition: https://welltempered.wordpress.com/2016/07/01/classical-music-handel-aria-competition-announces-2016-finalists-to-sing-next-thursday-night/ In any case, here is the schedule of the entire second season of the Willy Street Chamber Players. It is varied and impressive, especially in how it combines old masterpieces with modern and contemporary works. It features pieces by Philip Glass, Arnold Schoenberg, UW-Madison composer Laura Schwendinger , George Crumb, Dmitri Shostakovich, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven , Arcangelo Corelli and Georges Enescu : http://www.willystreetchamberplayers.org/events1.html A season subscription is $50. Individual concerts are $15 except for the Black Angels video art concert, which is $20. One of my earliest teaching positions was at Repton School in the UK. I recently donated a letter to the school’s archives that I found silted up in my ancient piles of correspondence. It’s one I received from the tenor Peter Pears, Benjamin Britten’s companion, whilst I was a young master at the school; in it he mentions that his great uncle, Steuart Adolphus Pears, had been Head Master of Repton from 1854 to 1874, a distinguished connection that had somehow grown hazy in the mists of time. The reason for the visits in 1955 and 1960 by Britten and Pears to perform in the Repton School Subscription Concerts, sparsely documented in the annals, becomes clearer. Some of you may recognise the name Repton from the tune which is sung to the hymn Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. An erstwhile Director of Music at Repton had figured that a particular tune from Parry’s oratorio Judith was a bit of a cracker, and so in it went to the school’s hymn book supplement in 1924, subsequently baptised ‘Repton’. But what has this got to do with the subject of this week’s blog—nightingales? Not a lot, except that I was intrigued to discover another musical connection with Repton shortly after taking up my post there. One of my favourite songs had always been A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square (8.120663 ), and I learned that the lyrics were written by Eric Maschwitz, a Repton Old Boy. So, this week, I’d like to develop that seed and present a number of works that have an association with the nightingale, beginning with that perennial favourite of mine by Maschwitz and Manning Sherwin. The next two pieces (and there are many more) were inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, The Nightingale, in which an emperor takes more pleasure from the sounds of a mechanical bird than the song of a real nightingale. Favole (8.555267 ) by Elisabetta Brusa is a suite the composer dedicated to her godson on the occasion of his birth. The second movement, The Real Nightingale and the Mechanical One, is described by Brusa as follows: “[Note] the difference between the lyrical melody of the real nightingale (flute) and the more rhythmical and less emotional melody…of the mechanical bird played by the piccolo and the glockenspiel; all of a sudden the mechanical nightingale breaks down, onomatopoeically expressed by the glissandi of the strings and by the sound of the rattle at the end of the last carillon-like section, so the real nightingale is able to triumph with its lyrical singing.” Here it is . Stravinsky’s The Nightingale (8.557501 ) was first performed in Paris in 1914; it’s a one-act opera in three scenes. Here’s how Robert Craft, the distinguished authority on Stravinsky, described the work’s orchestration: “Stravinsky’s orchestral palette…is never more exotically colourful than in The Nightingale, which is a virtual catalogue of avian imitations: tremolos, trills, appogiaturas, grupetti string harmonics, pizzicato glissandos, flautando and ponticello effects, harp and piano arpeggios, harp harmonics and the retuning of cello strings to produce harmonics on unusual pitches.” You can have fun hunting these down for yourself. Meanwhile, here’s an extract from Scene 2 (The Porcelain Palace of the Chinese Emperor): Song of the Nightingale . The Spanish composer Enrique Granados wrote two books of Goyescas, piano pieces that were inspired by his compatriot Francisco Goya and his ability to depict what Granados saw as the essence of the Spanish character. One of the Goyescas is titled The Maiden and the Nightingale (8.554403 ). The piece is basically a set of variations, but it ends with a cadenza that imitates the song of a nightingale . Edvard Grieg wrote more than 180 songs, but his relationship with singers was frequently one of dissatisfaction with their interpretation of his works. He wrote in his diary of 1906: What are singers? Nothing but vanity, stupidity, ignorance and dilettantism. I hate them, every one of them. ‘Also your wife?’, one will ask, but I answer: ‘I am sorry, but she is lucky enough not to be a singer.’ Hopefully, Grieg would have reconsidered his opinion after hearing this performance of part of his song, The Nightingale’s Secret (8.553781 ), which tells of a nightingale’s discretion in witnessing the amorous encounter of two lovers. Finally, a charming snatch that’s worth 60 seconds of anyone’s time: The Nightingale from Boris Tchaikovsky’s Swineherd Suite (8.572400 ), again based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen. It tells of the efforts of a lovesick Prince to gain the attentions of a Princess, which include the offering of two special gifts: one is an uncommonly beautiful rose; the other a silver-throated nightingale whose beguiling song is captured on the piccolo against a backdrop of harp and strings Oh, and very finally, having worked there for a while not too long ago, I can report that, sadly, nightingales are nowadays seldom heard singing in London’s Berkeley Square.
